We are happy to announce great news: the Lutheran church in Štítnik will undergo a major restoration. This project, that we have been preparing with the owner for a long time, will be the first major comprehensive restoration of this church in over a hundred years. It is great that the Štítnik Lutheran Church Congregation has committed itself to this bold step. The aim of the restoration is to fix the dilapidated state of the roof and to prevent dampness in the church, which threatens the fresco paintings and historic furnishings. The restoration includes the repair of the roof with the historic roof trusses and the floors of the church, as well as the restoration of the sacristy, which will house an exhibition of sacred art after the restoration.
Works will begin soon and the church will be closed to the public for the next three years. Therefore, if you are interested in admiring the beauty of the Gothic church in Štítnik, we recommend to you to not postpone your visit. We are also preparing a special open day with information for the public about the restoration itself, which will also be the last opportunity to see the interior for a long time – we will bring more information later.
The works will be financed by a grant from the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic under the Renovate Your House programme (Obnovme si svoj dom) in the amount of 550 000 EUR, a large part of the mandatory co-financing will be covered thanks to the generous contribution of our partner, the VÚB Foundation (Nadácia VÚB). However, additional resources will need to be raised and you will certainly hear from us in due course about the possibilities to contribute. In the meantime, you can also support the works with a donation directly to the Lutheran Congregation in Štítnik.
The contractor of the construction and restoration works will be Pamarch, s. r. o., a company with extensive experience in restoring cultural heritage in Slovakia.
